Cape Schanck, Mornington Peninsula

Found at the southern most tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Cape Schanck is one of our favourite places on the Peninsula to go walking. We quite often take the walk all the way in from Browns Road past Bushrangers Bay to Cape Schanck but on this occasion we drove in to the car park not far from the lighthouse. Sadly the weather was poor for a late spring day.

We decided to start with the walk that goes down to the tip of the Cape.

The wispy seed structures on the Clematis microphylla (Old Man’s Beard) caught my attention.

As we began the descent we noticed the top of the lighthouse behind us.

Below us the waves were crashing in. I always find it fascinating just watching waves.

We came to the steep part of the descent and even though sections are a boardwalk there are a lot of stairs so a moderate level of fitness and agility is required.

Here’s the tip of the Cape below us in this shot.

The stairway is more to the left so this is the view into Black Rock Beach.

Here’s the view looking back up towards the lighthouse so you can appreciate how far the walk is.

We clambered down onto the black rocks.

By now it was busier with other visitors coming down the stairway.

Here’s the view out to Pulpit Rock, at the very end.

Now we had the return climb to tackle. It isn’t too bad at the start but then you come to the section that is all steps.

At least the view is good when you stop to catch your breath.

The view back down on the ocean side.

Back at the car had a drink and ate some sandwiches we had prepared at home. As the weather had improved a bit we decided to take the track towards the beach area at Bushrangers Bay.

After about thirty minutes we came to a point where a side trail leads down to the beach. Given the temperature a swim wasn’t planned

but we did make our way down to the beach.

Lots of lovely rusted rocks made for a nice photo.

Wave action.

Back up we went to the main trail and began our walk back towards the carpark. The view down below us was wonderful.

By now we were a bit weary so we were happy to see the lighthouse again.

It was only about a twenty minute drive home to Dromana where we enjoyed a sit down and some afternoon tea.

Next post we take a short break up in Sydney again. First up – Sydney’s Botanical Gardens.
