Noojee 2013

Last post I mentioned I would take you back in time. Why? Because right now we aren’t going anywhere special until next month. So this is it for now.

Twelve years ago Karen and I celebrated 30 years since we had been first introduced ( in person; not by a five second look on a dating site) by taking Karen on an overnight trip back to her past. Before I met Karen she had started her teaching career in a little town in Gippsland, Noojee. So I booked a lovely little BnB in nearby Neerim.

From home it’s just under two hours drive.

Once we had settled in we headed into town to the Neerim South Hotel for dinner. Nice country sized servings and a good range of desserts.

After a lovely breakfast the next morning we packed our bags into the car and drove out to Noojee. Here is Karen out the front of the Noojee Primary School.

Noojee has two main attractions. The trestle bridge was the first one we headed to given it was mid morning. The three minute drive there takes you through beautiful forests.

At the turn off there was a large sealed area where you could take your pick of where to park.

From ground level the bridge was quite imposing. It’s Victoria’s tallest surviving trestle bridge.

We followed a well treed path and we were soon up on the bridge for a few photos.

Back at ground level I took this shot looking up at the bridge above us.

We also took a short walk through the forest

before driving back into town for a counter meal at Noojee’s second attraction, the Noojee Hotel, locally referred to as Nooj Pub. Again, serving sizes were good. To avoid the Sunday afternoon traffic returning to Melbourne we headed off after eating. As we drove out towards the main highway I couldn’t help but notice the view in my review mirror so we stopped and had a look behind us.

There had been bushfires earlier in the year but clearly there was lots of back burning still going on. What we saw didn’t make the evening TV news so even though it looked bad I guess things were under control.
