Warburton Rail Trail, Yarra Junction to Warburton

Inspired by my wife Karen completing the Oxfam 40 kms in 48 hours walk, in a team from her school, we thought we would revisit a short section of the trail with some other friends. After having Sunday lunch in Mt Evelyn we dropped a car up in Warburton and returned to Yarra Junction to start our walk.

Initially we passed through the Sunday Farmer’s Market in Yarra Junction.

The gravel trail was even and easy going here.

It’s always nice to walk hearing running water, so peaceful.

From time to time we had to watch out for bike riders as it is a shared trail.

Those coming from behind us were a bit of a problem if they didn’t ring their bells, especially on the bridges over the creeks as there was less room to stand to one side.

The scenery was very rural as we passed by a number of farms.

As we came closer to Warburton the trail became a sealed bitumen one.

Roughly two hours after we had started we came to the outskirts of Warburton.

Not long after we came to where our car was parked along the banks of the Yarra River. From here it flows over 200 kms through Melbourne’s suburbs to reach the city.

This section of the rail trail is well shaded for much of the way and makes for a good way to spend an afternoon. Some other sections are more exposed and would be hot work on a hot summer’s day.

Note: The whole rail trail goes from Warburton back to the railway station at Lilydale, 40 kms in all.
