Rainbow Beach to Hervey Bay

Another moving day so we had eaten breakfast and packed up the caravan by 10:00 check out time. Mel had even taken a quick walk with us. Loved the bottlebrush flowers just coming into bloom in the caravan park gardens.

Off we went. A perfect day, lots of blue sky and sunshine.

The road out from Rainbow Beach is a bit windy in parts but easy driving, even whilst towing a caravan.

Now some of my posts in the past have included road signs that are peculiarly Australian. For example, signs with kangaroos, koalas or even cassowaries on them. Well here’s one I don’t recall seeing before, warning us to watch out for brumbies (wild horses) roaming across the road.

Along the way we passed some pine plantations but no wild brumbies.

At the first intersection we turned left towards Gympie

but soon after we turned right onto the Boonooroo road towards Maryborough. It’s a bit of a short cut avoiding the need to go out to the main highway.

Within half an hour we came to the next T-intersection and again headed left, still aiming for Maryborough.

On arriving on the outskirts of Maryborough we swapped over driver, before driving through the town. There are lots of well preserved old buildings and ‘Queenslander’ houses there.

We arrived in Hervey Bay around noon.

We have stayed in Hervey Bay a few times now but this was the first time at the Windmill Caravan Park. After checking in we were soon set up and were eating lunch.

After lunch we walked down to the shared pathway along the Esplanade and walked along towards Urangan Pier,

re-acquainting ourselves with the delicious cakes and hot drinks at Kelz Bakehouse in Urangan at the end of a nice walk. Their ginger slice is scrumptious. As the light faded I made my way around to the camp kitchen and cooked up some meat on one of the three barbecues. I had a good chat with a guy from Tasmania who was also escaping some of winter up in Queensland before we took our cooked food back to our respective caravans.
