Winter Wanderings – Day 13

Rainbow Beach

Finally a day with a sunny start. After breakfast we did a quick bit of laundry. Once that was hung out we drove into Rainbow beach township. After parking the car at the beach end of the road we walked down the sealed ramp and onto the beach. This time we headed right, to the south. It didn’t take long for us to spot the rainbow coloured cliffs in the distance so off we went.

After all the rain it probably shouldn’t have been a surprise to hear trickling water and there it was coming down the hill through the dense foliage and over some rocks onto the beach.

Of course Mel wanted to stop for a sniff at the next group of rocks

but we were soon on our way again. We had this section of the beach all to ourselves.

We kept walking but came to a spot where the tide was coming in quickly. It was quite evident we could keep going if we didn’t mind having wet feet but whether we’d be able to get back looked likely to be an issue so we decided to turn back.

Back at the caravan park we decided to take another quick walk to the marina. Of course the tide was in there too.

By now we were a bit hungry so we headed to the caravan and made some sandwiches. The early afternoon was spent reading (me) and knitting (Karen) before we headed back to Rainbow Beach for a walk, this time in a northerly direction.

As we walked along it came to mind that we hadn’t driven up to Inskip Point whilst we had stayed at Rainbow Beach and the next day we would be heading further north to Hervey Bay. So we curtailed our walk there and jumped back in the car and drove north. For a fair way the road was sealed. As we came closer to Inskip Point we passed a few camping areas in the Inskip Point Recreation Area.

After about thirty minutes driving we reached the end of the sealed section of the road. Lots of potholes created a very slow, bumpy ride so when we came to a turning circle and parking area we stopped.

Good views across to K’gari (Fraser Island) could be had. Apparently at the tip of Inskip Point there are barges and ferries that cross over.

After a brief look we popped back into the car and started the drive back to the caravan park at Rainbow Beach marina, arriving just in time for a glorious sunset.

Next time we head to Urangan in the Hervey Bay area.
