Winter Wanderings – Days 7 – 9

Toowoomba to Scarborough

After eating breakfast and packing up the caravan we hitched up and set off. Firstly we drove through the main centre of Toowoomba, passing the Tourist Info Centre and the Botanic Gardens.

Given Toowoomba is quite elevated it was no surprise to start descending soon after.

However, the frequency of warning signs soon had us realising just how steep the decent was. Probably better than driving up with a caravan behind you though.

At the bottom we entered the Lockyer Valley. In recent years this area has suffered from floods at times.

Along the way we spotted the sign telling us we were in the greater metropolitan region of Queensland’s capital city, Brisbane.

From there it was busier traffic wise. At one point we stopped to refuel and to swap over driver. Our route took us around the western side of the city but the traffic was quite heavy even though peak hour was well over. As we came to the north we crossed over a long low bridge on the Houghton Highway.

By noon we were at our destination, Scarborough Holiday Village. We checked in and ate lunch. I was soon heading back towards the city. Along the way up we had received a cracked windscreen so I spent the afternoon at a windscreen repair shop having it replaced. On the way back to the caravan park of course it started to rain, something which isn’t good while a newly replaced windscreen is settling in but fortunately it was quickly over. Back at the caravan we ate dinner and had a quiet evening.

Scarborough

The next morning our friends came down to catch up. They brought their two dogs so we did a dog walk around the point and along the side of the marina.

As we walked we saw some coast guard boats come in.

Soon after a kayak team came by too.

Once we had finished walking we popped into the Sea Salt and Vine cafe near the caravan park for hot drinks and cake and a good chat.

Sadly the afternoon was spent in the caravan as once again we had to put up with rain.

The next morning it was very wet underfoot but not actually raining so we headed off for a walk with Mel. Parked at the cafe next door was a lovely old Rolls Royce.

The tide was nearly totally in.

An array of birds was lined up along a sand bar.

We walked in a different direction to the previous day along a path through a strip of parkland. However it started to drizzle rain again. Fortunately there were some picnic shelters so we ducked under one and waited for the rain to ease. Aiming not to get soaked we took a short cut back, passing the marina on our way to the caravan.

For lunch we drove across to our friends’ house in Newport. Lunch finished we sat down and watched the football. Our team, Melbourne Demons won, which was good.

Late afternoon we returned to the caravan park and as the sun set took a walk along to Scarborough point.

In the distance we could even see the Glasshouse Mountains.

Next post we head further north to Rainbow Beach.
